In general, nursing has become more complex and resources, such as time and personnel, have become increasingly scarce. As a recent hire to charge nurse in a busy metropolitan hospital, a team leader expects chaos. It isn’t the first time I have held the position, but one would think that over the years there would be a culture change. I elected to take in the challenges so that I may learn what I am studying in theory. The evening shift crew has been without a leader for some time and it has been evident the shift needed stability, advice, and a sense of group culture. Development of a group’s identity is a process in which group culture is established with shared goals, values, and expectations as groups work together over time.
