NR 283 Unit 6 Assignment; Pathophysiological Processes (RUA) - Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB)

Atrial fibrillation (AF) also known as Afib is the most common clinically encountered arrhythmia (heartbeat) in adults affecting 2.3 million in the United States. Approximately one in four adults over the age of 40 is diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (Turagam, 2016). Atrial fibrillation is a quivering or irregular arrhythmia that can lead to a stroke, blood clot, heart failure, and cardiac dysfunction.

Atrial fibrillation can develop at any age, ranging from children to adults, but the likelihood increases with age. Men are more likely to develop AF. However, women are more liable to die prematurely as a result of AF (Turagam, 2016).
