Explore Introduction
Taxonomy is the classification (organization) of organisms into related
groups (taxons). In the 1700s, Carl Linnaeus (also known as Carl von
Linné or Carolus Linnaeus) developed what is now known as the
Linnaean Classification System. At the highest level in this system,
everything in nature was divided into three kingdoms: mineral,
vegetable, and animal. Linnaeus then ranked sequentially smaller
groups within each kingdom as class, order, genus, species, and
variety. This contribution to science earned him the title “The Father of
Taxonomy.” As the field has advanced, many of the classifications
have changed. However, the basic structure of the Linnaean
Classification System is still used today.
Much has changed since Linnaeus first came up with his three-kingdom
classification system. As the evolution of modern organisms was better
understood, it became clear that the three-kingdom classification was far
too simple. The highest level of taxonomy is now a category called
domain. Starting with this extremely general classification, there is a
continual increase in specificity as organisms are classified into smaller
and smaller taxa……….. Continue
