  • BIOL134 Week 2 Discussion; A Mysterious Illness on Vancouver Island British Columbia

The topic for week 2 is protists and fungi. For week 2 you will read a case study about the mysterious cause of death of organisms ranging from dolphins to dogs to humans on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. What is the culprit? How did it get to the island? How is it transmitted between organisms?

This case study will teach you about the importance of organismal diversity in uncovering the culprit behind the outbreak of this illness. You will work progressively through the case study, gradually gathering more information, and responding to questions that do not always have definite answers, thereby giving you a taste of how real science works.

The intent is for you to use your knowledge of major organismal groups to figure out this "who-done-it" scenario. Basic organismal characteristics of prokaryotes and eukaryotes are highlighted, and mechanisms for origin and transmission of organismal outbreaks are discussed.

Read through the attached case study and answer the Three C's (expained below in Part A) and then answer the case study questions according to the instructions in Part B, below. You will post all of this (the 3 C's, and the answers to questions from Part B) into the discussion board as your initial post.
