commenced nine broad core competencies that all nurse practitioners must abide by no matter what area or specialty the nurse practitioner practices in. In 2017, the competencies were updated to be compatible with current medicine. The nine competencies include scientific foundations, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system, ethics, and independent practice. Walden University’s Family Nurse Practitioner program has helped me prepare to transition from a student to practicing in the field to synthesize the knowledge that I have gained throughout the program to not only learn the competencies but to apply them as a practicing Advanced Practice Nurse. It is important as a nurse practitioner to be aware of the competencies to provide a safe and effective patient care environment and be a well-rounded healthcare provider.
