Analyzing Group Techniques (Interpersonal Group Therapy for Addiction Recovery Demonstration)

According to Ezhumalai et al. (2018), group therapy is a form of treatment that involves emotionally disturbed persons being placed in groups, that are guided by one or more therapists, helping them achieve change. Group therapy enhances individuals’ social functioning through group experiences that are carried out in a purposeful manner, allowing them to cope with their personal, group or community problems more effectively (Ezhumalai et al., 2018).

This review will provide an analysis of the group techniques used in the “Interpersonal Group Therapy for Addiction Recovery Demonstration” by the Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies (CATS), exploring the group therapy techniques used in the video, reviewing evidence from literature on these techniques, as well as analyzing how the therapists handled the session, and providing an insight into my performance as a therapist leading such a group.

Interpersonal Group Therapy for Addiction Recovery Demonstration: Brief Overview

The video covers a demonstration of interpersonal group psychotherapy session by the Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies (CATS), with clients who are recovering from addiction (CATS, 2016). This video highlights the breakthrough of one of the participants, Jimmy, and how the group overall assists/supports each other to reach such a level of sharing (CATS, 2016).

Group Therapy Techniques Used and Evidence from Literature Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

The main technique that was used in this video or session is the interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) technique. In this video one of the participants, Jimmy, can be seen sharing something he had not shared before regarding an experience connected to his addiction. Jimmy shared with the group that he used to steal his mother’s pain medications to feed his addiction, even though she was in a great deal of pain (CATS, 2016). This seemed like a baggage he had been carrying with him for a while and finally felt safe to share it with the group. He clearly also seemed to have a lot of guilt weighing on his mind

because of his actions, as his mother eventually passed away……….. Continue
