Bipolar disorder is a genetic brain disorder that causes extreme mood and behavior (UpToDate, n.d.). Although mood swings and tantrums are normal in young people, especially in adolescents, young people with bipolar have mood swings exceeding what is often seen for their age.

What are the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder?

 

Young people with bipolar disorder can alternate between extreme "highs" called "mania" or "hypomania," or extreme "lows" called "depression" (Birmaher, 2021).

Manic or hypomanic symptoms in young people include:

 

  • Quick to anger

 

  • Energetic or more active than normal

 

  • Feeling very confident about themselves or their abilities

 

  • Feeling like they have special powers

 

  • Sleeping as little as three hours and being restful

 

  • Talking more than usual

 

  • Feeling like their brain is working unusually fast
