Week 1 Main Post: Nurse Practitioner Professional Issues
This paper aims to discuss obtaining and maintaining an advanced practice registered nurse, APRN, license in the state of North Carolina, NC. All APRN applicants in NC state must apply for an “Approval to Practice”, to the NC Board of Nursing, NCBON on successful completion of the national board examination (North Carolina Nurses Association [NCNA], n.d.). Each application is then reviewed by a six-member panel consisting of three members from the NCBON, and three from the NC Medical Board (North Carolina Nurses Association [NCNA], n.d.). The reistration fee is $25, in addition to a $100 fee per physician (North Carolina Nurses Association [NCNA], n.d.). The Approval to Practice application must be submitted at least forty-five days prior to the NC Medical Board meeting at which time the application is reviewed for approval and must be renewed annually (North Carolina Nurses Association [NCNA], n.d.). In NC an APRN must be licensed as a registered nurse, RN, in NC or a compact state, and registered as an APRN (NursingLicensure.org, 2020). The NCBON’s website is NCBON.com.
Scope of Practice
The scope of practice for the NC APRN is defined by academic educational preparation and national certification and maintained competence (NCBON.Com, n.d.).
