Personality disorders are a group of mental health conditions marked by patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that differ immensely from societal norms and expectations. Controversies about personality disorders include questions about their validity as a concept, diagnostic criteria' reliability and truth, and treatments' effectiveness. The aim of this paper is to consider the controversy encircling borderline personality disorder and how to maintain therapeutic relationships when working with patients with such disorders.

The Controversy About BPD

 

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental health illness characterized by a pattern of intense emotions, impulsive behavior and impaired social relationships (Gentile et al., 2022). BPD controversy includes questions about its validity as a concept, diagnostic criteria' reliability and truth, and treatments' effectiveness. One of the main controversies surrounding BPD is whether it is a distinct disorder or a severe form of other conditions such as depression or post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some argue that BPD is not a good idea and that its diagnostic criteria are too broad and include symptoms also seen in other conditions. Another controversy is the reliability and validity of diagnostic criteria for BPD. Some argue that the requirements are not detailed enough and can lead to overdiagnosis, while others say that they are too restrictive and can lead to underdiagnosis. Further, the diagnostic criteria have been criticized as being culturally biased, as the symptoms of BPD may be more common or present differently in certain cultures (Mendez-Miller et al., 2022)..........
