Developmental Assessment and the School-Aged Child

Child care is a complex process which requires a continued assessment to determine if the child is developing normally. Unlike adults, it is difficult to note most of the mental conditions or delays in the development rate of an individual. As such, a parent should ensure that they regularly seek the services of a health provider who can be able to offer more insights regarding the development rate of the child, any challenge that the child might be facing and the interventions that one can do to manage the condition in case the child require special care. The assessment process allows the health provider to gather information regarding the child which they can then use to make vital decisions (Chiocca, 2014). Since most children are unable to respond to the questions asked by a health provider, there are other better alternatives which are used in this process. These include observation of the child, interviewing the parents and other family members, use of rating scales and checklists, providing formal and informal tests. The purpose of this paper is to assess the needs of a school-aged child between the ages of 5 and 12 years old.

A Comparison of the Physical Assessments among School-Aged Children

School-aged children are aged between 5 and 12 years. At this age, most of the children are able to respond to some questions raised by the examiner. The examiner should, however, ensure that they only ask the questions that children this age is able to answer. The physical assessment for this group is mainly achieved through observation and interviewing both the parent/guardian and the child (McInerny et al., 2016). At this age, a child is likely to have strong and smooth motor skills. Some coordination such as the eye-hand, physical abilities and balance might be different depending on the age. While assessing children this age, some of the fine motor skills might vary for the group. These can be observed on how the child is able to dress well, write neatly and carry out some chores such as doing dishes or arranging the bed. A big variation is expected in the weights, heights, and body builds for children in this age group (The Pediatric Physical Examination., n.d.). The development of secondary sexual characteristics might also differ for children in their age............. Continue
