Adolescents have complex lives that can change quickly. The issues faced by today’s adolescents did not exist or were not acknowledged in past generations (OAH, 2018). Sexual orientation and gender are important aspects to adolescent identity. Expressing and exploring gender identities is a normal part of development. Some are able to identify and express their gender identity at an early age while others cannot (Youth.gov, n. d.).
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) adolescents experience many challenges due to how others react to their sexual orientation or expression. The disparities among the LGBTQ population are influenced by the stigma and discrimination associated with their gender identity. Negative experiences faced include, rejection by family and peers, and inadequate support in schools, employment and communities. LGBTQ teens are at high risk for suicide, homelessness, and illicit drug use.
