Executive Summary
Workplace violence is defined as “Incidents where staff are abused, threatened, or assaulted in circumstances related to their work, including commuting to and from work, involving an explicit or implicit challenge to their safety, well-being, or health,” (WHO, 2020). This definition includes physical and psychological harm, including attacks, verbal abuse, bullying, both sexual and racial harassment (Stephens, 2019). Increased workplace violence is a daily concern for health care workers and unfortunately as this writer has seen, is on the rise. These workers missed work related to the violence and in the long term can affect future attendance, performance, and job satisfaction.
This writer recently has seen an increase to violence within the Emergency department at Roosevelt General Hospital related to patients against healthcare workers, specifically physicians and nurses on floor. This has made returning to work after such events difficult as well as presented many different views on how to improve the environment for both employees and patients.
