Case Study: Congestive Heart Failure
The client in this case study is a 76-year-old female that has complaints of weight gain, peripheral edema, abdominal swelling, and shortness of breath. The client has a history of congestive heart failure and admits to being noncompliant with her diuretic. Per the client, it makes her “have to get up every couple of hours to go to the bathroom.” The client sleeps on top of two pillows to get enough air. This paper will analyze this case study and explain the cardiopulmonary and cardiovascular pathophysiologic processes, how these processes interact to affect the patient, and any racial or ethnic variables that impact physiological functioning.
Cardiovascular and Cardiopulmonary Pathophysiologic Processes
Heart failure has both cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary pathophysiologic processes that manifest as multiple symptoms. Heart failure is a pathophysiologic condition in which the heart is unable to generate an adequate cardiac output. This results in inadequate perfusion of tissues or an increase in diastolic filling pressure of the left ventricle. If both occur, there is an increase of pulmonary capillary pressures (McCance and Huether, 2019). In this case study, the client has a history of congestive heart failure, which is also known as left heart failure. Congestive heart failure can be broken down into two types.……….. Continue
