Use of Off-Label Drugs in Pediatrics

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an off-label drug is an “unapproved use of an approved drug” (n.d.). For example, the term off-label can mean that the drug is given in a different way (ex. oral instead of capsule), used to treat a medical condition that it is not approved to treat, or given in a different dose (ex. taking two tablets daily instead of the approved once daily).  A prescriber may want to use an off-label drug to treat a condition if there is not an approved drug to treat the condition or when other approved drugs have not helped the condition.
