Censorship
Book banning is an ancient activity practiced throughout history and the world. (Miller, Laurence 1994). “Censorship, as discussed here, is defined as the forbidding, blocking, limiting, or obstructing access to information for whatever reason.” (Petress 2005). Many countries around the world use censorship to ban the reading, selling, and distribution of books. Book banning seems to fall into four categories, obscenity, promotes secular humanism or is anti-religion, Self-censorship in the publishing business or government, Subordination of individuals belonging to a particular racial or sexual group. (Miller, Laurence 1994). Some people believe that censorship is essential in everyday life, to control biased thinking or perhaps to protect society from forming opinions that are potentially harmful to cognitive growth. Censorship and the banning of books should be outlawed it is a breach of the first amendment, it prevents people from forming their own opinions, and it takes away the ability to expand their knowledge on certain topics.
Censorship essentially violates our first amendment in more ways than
one. It violates our freedom of speech, in the United States of America
we have the right per the constitution to speak our minds by banning
books and/or censoring books we are hindering that right, and arguably
denied that right and freedom. It violates our freedom of free press.
According to the constitution, the first amendment states that we have
“the right to publish newspapers, magazines, and other printed matter
without governmental restriction and subject only to the laws of libel,
obscenity, sedition, etc. and the right to circulate opinions in print
