Legalization of Marijuana
Recently, California has legalized what is considered to be a class one controlled substance, which is marijuana. The topic of legalization has been one of high controversy in recent years. It has been an ongoing debate as to whether it is beneficial to the public and their health, or if it has negative health issues and causes issues such as higher crime. Despite arguments that marijuana is safe and non-addictive, evidence shows there are numerous negative side effects, and can be extremely addictive. Legalization of recreational marijuana in California is going to cause more issues for law enforcement and the legal system because it’s difficult to regulate distribution, causes more crimes, and there’s a higher risk for people to drive under the influence.
In November of 2016, California voters voted to pass Proposition 64 which legalized marijuana for recreational use. This was fairly recent, so there has been limited rules put into place thus far to regulate the distribution of it. Federally, marijuana still remains illegal. California has a multitude of sites producing pot, then illegally selling it to the rest of the U.S. market, posing a difficulty in being able to track now what is coming in and out of California (Barcott, & Scherer, 2015). Drug trafficking into Mexico and other states and areas where it is not legal has become a major concern for authorities.
