According to James Sire, “a cohesive worldview provides the foundation for our moral values and corresponding actions. Our worldview provides the holistic perspective from which we interpret ambiguous evidence” (2004). I will discuss various meanings of spirituality as well as give you an understanding of the basic concepts of pluralism, scientism and postmodernism. James Sire’s seven basic worldview questions will be answered based on my personal worldview.
Spirituality
Spirituality meanings dependent on the person you are talking to. Every person can have a meaning defined by their perspective and that perspective can change at any time. Merriam-Webster defines spirituality as “something that in ecclesiastical law belongs to the church or to a cleric as such” (2018). However, Wikipedia (though not always a great source) says the following:
“The meaning of spirituality has developed and expanded over time, and various
connotations can be found alongside each other. Traditionally, spirituality referred to a religious process of re-formations which aims to recover the original shape of man, oriented at the image of God as exemplified by the founders and sacred texts of the religions of the world” (2018).
It was used in early Christianity to refer to a life oriented toward the Holy Spirit, however, during late medieval times it began to include the mental aspects of life. Personally, I believe that spirituality does not have to involve a church. People can be spiritual and believe in a higher power without belonging to a specific religion or church.
