Introduction

A worldview is the framework or concept of how a person views life and world around them (Burnett, n.d.). Some refer to such concepts or ideas as philosophies. There are many different standpoints that can that make up a worldview. Spirituality may be the basis of a worldview and can be interpreted different ways. This paper will discuss and define Christian worldview, postmodern relativism in healthcare, scientism, and this student’s personal worldview while defining the provided topics.

Worldview Analysis

The Christian worldview of spirituality and ethics also known as a biblical view was present, practiced and continued throughout the beginnings of patient care or modern times. Historians Dolan Fitzpatrick, and Herrmann state, the teaching and example of Jesus Christ had influences on the start of leadership in nursing as roles in nursing expanding (Shelly & Miller, 2006). Florence Nightingale is known for the reform of nursing back to the roots of Christianity as well as setting forth high standards and expectations (Shelly & Miller, 2006). When compared to the postmodern relativism within healthcare the biggest change was technology and the removal of spirituality. Students continue to be taught with more focus on “professionalism” and expectations for them to leave out their spirituality. Unfortunately,  this has led to decline in the importance of service as well as compassion in nursing with the new focus of professionalism leading toward the want for power, status and compensation. Which is a change from the past where most nurses were hardly paid or used as free labor in during their education. This does not align with the concept of treating the patient, known as holistic care, because holistic includes physical, emotional, spiritual and social aspects.
