Student clinical experience enhances the student classroom experience which includes psychiatric concepts and theories. The clinical experience plays an important role in preparing the PMHNP student for the real-world experience (Demir & Ercan, 2018). The combination of classroom experience and clinical experience will aid the PMHNP students to be competent in providing mental health services to patients in the real world after graduation (Demir & Ercan, 2018). This journal entry will discuss the PMHNP clinical experience by reflecting on the student’s clinical goals, growth and development, and strengths and opportunities for improvement.
During my clinical experience, I was able to successfully meet my first
two goals which include “able to assess, diagnose, and suggest treatment
plans for at least six patients appropriately with minimal corrections
from my preceptor by the 10th week of clinical, and able to complete an
initial psychiatric evaluation with minimal corrections from my preceptor
by the end of the first month of clinical with minimal assistance from
my preceptor”. I was able to assess, diagnose, and suggest an appropriate
treatment plan for at least six patients even before the 10th week of
clinical. I was also able to develop an initial psychiatric evaluation with a
minimal correction from my instructor by the end of the first month of
clinical. However, I did not completely meet my third goal which is “able
to differentiate between pathophysiological and psychopathological
conditions across the lifespan by the end of the 10th week of
